Hockey: My Panther hopes for the rest o' the season

I concede that Florida won't make the playoffs this season. It's a damn shame too. With 17 games left to play, I don't think they can catch up 10 points. I have a new goal though, one that I've thought about for a few weeks so I might as well blog about it.
Florida must finish higher than the New York Islanders at the end of the season. I simply hate the Islanders for no real reason except that they're the worst managed team in the league, year after year. If you look up the worst trades in the past 8-10 years, I reckon the Islanders alone are on the losing end of half of them. But seriously, thanks for giving us Olli Jokinen (among others)! Oh, and I think Rick DiPietro's crap, also for no real reason. I'd almost trade him away for Jussi Markkanen!
That's a 5 point buffer to make up. Tonight's victory over the Isles was a good start, plus it netted Jay Bouwmeester his first goal of the season (in his 66th game). Florida's top defender, Bouwmeester had scored 25 or so assists, heaps of them were point shots that got deflected in and credited to some other player, so he really deserves it.
Let's go Cats!

I hate the Islanders too! We have a history of making big trades with them and coming out so far on top that it's almost pitiful (see Peca <-> Pyatt/Connolly), or the Isles picking up UFAs from us that completely back-fired on them (see Satan/Zhitnik). I delight in seeing their stupid recruiting decisions bite them in the ass almost as much as I hate the fact that Pat LaFontaine ever became such a recruiting decision.
(And congratulations to Jay Bouwmeester! His story reminds me of Teppo Numminen: he grabbed 32 assists in 50-odd games to lead our team in assists without scoring a single goal... goes to the Olympics, scores with his first shot on goal about five minutes into the first game... comes back to the NHL and breaks his drought after only a few games. Now he thinks he's Alex Ovechkin or something, it's just not cricket.)
Woo! Panthers take out the Capitals in a shoot-out today. And Bouwmeester scores again!
The best part is that Nieuwendyk scored the shootout goal. :D
He is the man. He was one of my favourite players when the Stars won the Cup about 1999.
Plus his name has "dyk" in it and I played a full 82 game season with the Stars in NHL 99.
Last night, when Dean was so-intensely-watching-it-was-retarded the gymnastics, I just giggled every time one Aussie gymnast, Holly Dykes, had her name read out.
It's so much fun being a childish idiot.
Please do not mention the 99-00 season in my presence. You're lucky you didn't mention Brett Hull!
(I had a chuckle at Holly Dykes too, poor lass.)
What's the story with the 99-00 season and Brett Hull? That was back in the days when Florida had Pavel Bure and consequently made the playoffs...
Man I loved the sight of Bure in Florida colours, I dunno why.
Anyway... 99-00. Dallas and Buffalo were in the Cup Finals, the series gets to game six... triple freakin' overtime, teams are still deadlocked. Brett Hull puts a shot on Hasek who blocks it but gives away the rebound, Hull takes possession again with a skate in the crease and scores. The goal is reviewed and it's allowed even though the NHL rules clearly state that a player cannot score with a skate in the crease (the NHL's official line is that he "still had possession" the whole time and didn't get a rebound).
Total bollocks.
Oh yeah, and forgot to mention... Dallas were up 3-2 in the series at the time and that was the Cup winning goal.
Fair enough. No longer shall I mention those particular Cup finals around these parts.
